Attorney Jane Leger – Helping clients with their day to day needs

Ferguson Law Firm Attorney Jane Leger explains the importance of a trial attorney.

When our clients come in, we examine the full spectrum of things we might be able to help them with — such as whether they have transportation to get to and from medical appointments, or to work if they're still able to work. We look at whether they have personal injury protection coverage on their own automobile insurance policy that will cover their doctor visits.

In fact, I had a client come in just last week for their new-client appointment — the first time I would meet them and talk with them about their lawsuit and their situation. When that client walked through the door, I was able to hand him a check for several thousand dollars to cover his medical treatment, because we were able to file against his own auto policy and have his medical visits covered. That's the kind of thing we can do to help our clients in terms of transportation, medical treatment, and income while they're getting treated.

Even after the fact, a lot of times we have clients who make very substantial recoveries, and most people are not accustomed to dealing with large sums of money, whether it be hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. I think it would be irresponsible for a lawyer to hand a client a huge check and not give them the resources they need — whether that's structured-settlement professionals or financial advisors — professionals who can help them protect their money, invest their money, and live off of it.
