I am still shocked at the number of people — and this is coming from a lawyer whose face is on billboards — who hire lawyers simply because they have a funny commercial, a nice billboard, or a big office. We may be guilty of those things, but I just ask that you do your due diligence. You wouldn't hire a surgeon because they have a funny commercial. You wouldn't hire a banker because of a hilarious Instagram post. If you call around and ask what law firm to hire — more importantly, what lawyer to hire — it's personal. It's more personal than that. Just because lawyers have a lot of billboards up doesn't mean they know how to try lawsuits.

I'm a trial lawyer. I was in trial Monday. I love trying cases — it's the thing that I love to do, and I'm a big believer that if you love doing something, you're going to be pretty good at it. I'm not saying I'm the best — of course not, with Chip, Jane, Tim, and Cody around. But I'm at my best when I'm in a courtroom. And if you can find a lawyer who's at their best in the courtroom — or a surgeon who's at their best in an operating room — you're going to be just fine using that person. When I'm in my element, I grow, I thrive, and I do it because I enjoy it and because I like doing it for the clients.
