College Station, Texas — When Texas trial lawyer Cody Dishon stands before a jury, he is known as a relentless advocate for his clients and a lawyer who holds powerful corporations accountable. Recently, Dishon brought that same passion to students at Texas A&M University.

Dishon spoke as a guest speaker for Texas A&M University’s LULAC chapter, sharing his insights on justice, advocacy, and the importance of standing up for those who need a voice. Addressing student leaders and aspiring professionals, he challenged them to see the law not merely as a job, but as a powerful tool for justice and community impact.

“Moments like this remind me why the law matters. The law is not just a job. It is a calling to protect those who are wronged, pursue truth, and make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Dishon also emphasized the importance of purpose in the legal profession.

“I truly love helping and guiding others who are passionate about this work and who want to pursue law for the right reasons, not just for the paycheck, but for the impact,” he said.

Inspiring the Next Generation

One of the most impactful parts of the discussion centered on identity. Drawing from his own working-class roots, Cody encouraged students to stop viewing their backgrounds as barriers.

“To see a student realize that their background is not a barrier, but a strength is why I do this,” Dishon said.  “Students from working-class backgrounds, or those with no connections in Washington or Austin, deserve to know they can walk into any courtroom, boardroom, or legislative chamber and fight for the people who need them most. Use your background as fuel for the passion, drive, and heart it takes to overcome any obstacle in your path.”

He emphasized that the legal profession needs advocates who understand the struggles of working families and who are willing to stand up for them.

The legal profession needs more people who understand the challenges facing working families and are willing to fight for them,” Dishon said.

The message resonated strongly. The president of Texas A&M’s LULAC chapter, Keilani Becerra, shared that Dishon’s prior advice inspired her to cancel her planned gap year and pursue law school immediately. She has since been accepted to multiple law schools across the country, earning scholarship offers and taking the next step toward a future in advocacy.

Students left the event energized and motivated to pursue careers in law, advocacy, and public service.

The Ferguson Law Firm thanks Texas A&M University’s LULAC chapter for the opportunity to connect with such inspiring students.
